The open-source VLC Media Player is one of the best-known software in its segment on Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS and Android. The non-profit organization behind the program now says that it expects the app to hit 3 billion downloads (across all platforms) at some stage on Friday, January 11.
As part of the celebrations, the VideoLan team announced at the CES that the app will soon add AirPlay support, allowing users to stream videos from their iPhones and Android devices to their Apple TV.
In an interview to Variety, lead developer, Jean-Baptiste Kempf, said that the free update would be rolled out to the app in ‘about a month’. Elaborating on the timeline, he told The Verge, “We would like it to be part of VLC 4, which is the next major release we are currently working on. We will let you know in advance once we define a date”.
