Weather App Sued by City of LA for Selling User Location Data

Weather apps would never work without using your location but the official app for the Weather Channel not only used your location data for the app's functionality but also allegedly sold it to others, including for ads.
Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said the City of Los Angeles has sued TWC Product and Technology LLC, the company that runs The Weather Channel app. The filing claims the app covertly mined private data of users and sold it to third parties, including advertisers. TWC is putting corporate profits ahead of user privacy, the filing alleged, and also tracked users 24/7.
The Weather Channel app allegedly used location data to track users' home, work and frequently visited places and how long they spent at each location. The data was allegedly sent to IBM affiliates and to advertising firm and also for non-weather related purposes, contrary to what it claimed in its privacy pol`icy.
