The CBI has reportedly asked social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter to use Microsoft's 'PhotoDNA' image-scanning technology to track suspects in criminal cases.
According to the Indian Express, the CBI last month issued a notice to the social media firms last month, asking them to scan the photographs of some unidentified suspects and report about any possible matches from their respective databases.
Originally launched in 2009, the software has been credited for drastically reducing the circulation of child pornography online, but advocacy groups argue that using the technology for general cases would be in direct violation of individual privacy rights that were upheld by the Supreme Court as a Fundamental Right last year.
