A Russian startup called StartRocket is looking to take billboard advertisements to space using a constellation of small, tissue box-sized satellites called CubeSat.
According to Astronomy Magazine, StartRocket’s CEO, Vladilen Sitnikov, is planning to use CubeSats to “unfurl Mylar sails some 30 feet in diameter to catch and reflect sunlight, creating a pixelated matrix” that could be used to display brand logos. He also apparently believes that the technology can be used by governments to convey messages and instructions in times of emergencies.
The initial test for ‘Orbital Display’ is expected to happen this year itself, with a full-fledged demo in 2021.
