Pony.ai Launches App-Based Driveless Taxi Service in China

Driverless cars are slowly but surely becoming a reality in many parts of the world. After Google’s Waymo launched its autonomous cab services in the US state of Phoenix last year, it’s now the turn of Chinese driverless car startup, Pony.ai, to launch a similar service in Guangzhou.
According to CNBC, the service is currently still in an experimental stage, and is open only to the company’s employees and a few handpicked users, who can use a dedicated app to hail a self-driving cab from a pre-set location in the Nansha district of Guangzhou, China.
Rides are free during the testing phase, but that obviously will change once the company launches the service commercially. There’s no word, however, as to when that might happen.
